Secure Cycle Parking for Residential Communities

Transport for Wales sought to improve access to secure bicycle parking within residential communities across Wales, addressing concerns around theft, vandalism and the lack of convenient storage. The project required a high-security, space-efficient solution across multiple locations, supported by ongoing maintenance to ensure long-term reliability and encourage greater participation in active travel.

Wales, from Holyhead to Swansea

The Challenge

Transport for Wales sought to support greater participation in active travel by improving access to secure bicycle parking within residential communities across Wales.

For many residents, the lack of safe, convenient and accessible bicycle storage represents a significant barrier to cycling. Concerns surrounding bicycle theft, vandalism and the security of increasingly valuable bicycles and e-bikes can discourage people from choosing cycling for everyday journeys.

This challenge is particularly relevant in residential developments where space is limited and residents may not have access to private garages, gardens or suitable storage facilities. Inadequate cycle parking can also lead to bicycles being stored in communal areas, creating accessibility and safety concerns.

The project required a high-security, space-efficient solution capable of being installed across geographically dispersed residential locations, stretching from Holyhead in North Wales to Swansea in South Wales.

Beyond the initial installation, the infrastructure needed to remain secure, reliable and accessible over the long term, supported by an effective service and maintenance programme.

The challenge was not simply to provide additional bicycle storage, but to create the confidence and convenience necessary to encourage residents to adopt cycling as a practical, affordable and sustainable mode of transport.

THE SOLUTION

Bikedok was appointed to deliver a comprehensive secure cycle parking solution involving the supply and installation of 40 high-security bicycle hangars at residential locations across Wales.

Independently accredited to Sold Secure Powered Diamond standard, Bikedok’s bicycle hangars are designed to provide enhanced protection against modern bicycle theft techniques, including attacks involving portable power tools.

Each hangar provides secure, weather-resistant storage for up to six bicycles within a compact footprint, making the solution particularly suitable for residential environments where available space is limited.

The project spans a substantial geographical area, from Holyhead to Swansea, requiring coordinated planning, logistics and installation management to ensure consistent delivery standards across multiple sites.

In addition to the installation programme, Bikedok is providing a comprehensive service and maintenance package, supporting the long-term reliability, security and operational performance of the infrastructure.

This integrated approach provides the housing association with a complete solution, combining high-quality physical infrastructure with ongoing asset support and maintenance.

THE OUTCOME

Through close coordination with Transport for Wales and the housing association, Bikedok is delivering a consistent, high-security cycle parking solution across a diverse range of residential locations.

The installation programme will provide up to 240 secure bicycle parking spaces across Wales, giving residents access to purpose-designed facilities that address concerns surrounding theft, security and convenience.

The compact design of the hangars enables secure bicycle storage to be incorporated into residential environments while minimising the space required and helping improve the organisation of communal areas.

The inclusion of an ongoing service and maintenance package provides additional long-term value, helping ensure the facilities remain safe, functional and accessible throughout their operational life.

The project also demonstrates Bikedok’s capability to manage geographically dispersed infrastructure programmes, combining product security, installation expertise and ongoing maintenance within a single delivery package.

THE IMPACT

The introduction of high-security bicycle parking within residential communities has the potential to deliver benefits extending far beyond the provision of additional storage.

By giving residents greater confidence that their bicycles can be stored securely and conveniently, the project addresses one of the most significant barriers to cycling and supports the wider ambition of making active travel a realistic choice for everyday journeys.

Accessible cycle parking can encourage residents to cycle to work, education, local amenities and public transport connections, helping reduce reliance on private vehicles while supporting healthier, more active lifestyles.

For households facing increasing transport costs, cycling also provides an affordable alternative for shorter journeys, supporting greater transport choice and accessibility.

The project contributes to the wider sustainability objectives of Transport for Wales and the housing association by providing infrastructure that can support reductions in transport-related carbon emissions, congestion and local air pollution as cycling participation increases.

Importantly, the inclusion of a long-term service and maintenance programme recognises that encouraging lasting changes in travel behaviour requires more than the initial installation of infrastructure. Facilities must remain secure, accessible and reliable if residents are to develop the confidence to use them regularly.

By delivering 40 high-security bicycle hangars across Wales, supported by ongoing servicing and maintenance, Bikedok is helping to establish the infrastructure needed to encourage active travel, improve residential environments and support healthier, better-connected and more sustainable communities.
