Worcester City Council was seeking to introduce its first dedicated secure cycle parking facility as part of its wider commitment to active travel and sustainable transport. While the city had invested in improving walking and cycling connections, including the refurbishment of railway arches linking Worcester Foregate Street station to the riverside, there was no secure cycle parking provision available for people travelling into the city centre.
The Council wanted to provide cyclists with a safe, convenient and affordable place to park their bikes, helping to remove concerns around security and give more people the confidence to choose cycling for everyday journeys.
The chosen location presented several challenges. The cycle parking needed to be accommodated within a refurbished railway arch with limited available space, maintained pedestrian access requirements and no ability to create a secure enclosed facility. The Council therefore required a solution capable of providing individual high-security parking spaces whilst remaining accessible, easy to use and suitable for a busy city-centre environment.
In addition to the physical infrastructure, Worcester City Council sought a technology-enabled solution that would allow users to reserve and access parking through a mobile app whilst providing valuable usage data to support future active travel investment and planning decisions.
In April 2026, Bikedok delivered its proven BD Strongbox secure cycle locker solution, combining high-security cycle storage with a fully integrated digital booking and management platform. The solution was well suited to Worcester City Council’s requirements, providing secure individual cycle parking within the constraints of the refurbished railway arch whilst supporting the Council’s wider active travel ambitions.
The installation comprised 16 smart cycle lockers, including 14 standard individual lockers and two oversized lockers designed to accommodate cargo bikes, e-bikes, adapted cycles and other non-standard bicycles. This configuration maximised the available space within the refurbished railway arch whilst ensuring the facility remained accessible to a diverse range of users. The horizontal loading design also removed the need for cyclists to lift their bikes, creating a more convenient and inclusive user experience.
Security was central to the proposal. Each locker provides fully enclosed, individually secured cycle storage, giving users confidence that their bicycles are protected from theft, vandalism and the weather. Combined with app-based access and user authentication, the system delivers a level of security and accountability not typically available through traditional cycle parking infrastructure.
Alongside the physical infrastructure, the Bikedok platform enables users to check availability, reserve and access lockers through a simple mobile app, whilst providing Worcester City Council with valuable insight into usage, occupancy and demand. This data-driven approach supports evidence-based decision making and creates a scalable foundation for future expansion of secure cycle parking across the city.
